Creating Your Postpartum Nest: The Mom Setup
An essential part of becoming a mother is learning how to rest and take care of yourself. Navigating those first few weeks after delivery is tough, even when you are blessed with a wonderful support network.
This week, I want to share the exact things that made this postpartum phase more than just tolerable, along with a few things I discovered later that can help you catch a little extra rest.
When it comes to relaxing and stimulating your milk letdowns, sensory comfort is everything. Pleasant scents, gentle massage, cozy temperatures, soothing sounds, and ultimate comfort are the absolute keys to a successful pumping or breastfeeding session. Creating a dedicated "nesting corner" in your bedroom stocked with all your essential gadgets can make a world of difference.
My own experience is rooted deeply in pumping. I breastfed for the first month and pumped for the rest of my journey. But take it from me: rushing is not recommended! Pumping takes time, and it is entirely about learning to relax.
Things to Build Your Nest
Every mama’s nesting list will look a little different. My goal is to give you the inspiration to find exactly what fits your personal vibe. Here are the elements that anchored my space:
1. A Truly Comfortable Chair
I didn't buy a brand-new glider; I just moved my favorite standard chair into the nursery. If I could do it over again today, I would absolutely invest in a chair that both reclines and glides. First, because the sheer amount of time you spend in it makes it completely worth the investment. Second, it is a lifesaver for helping the baby fall asleep. We had a recliner in our living room that we used constantly, but sometimes the main house was just too noisy. Having a quiet, comfortable backup chair in a peaceful room is essential.
2. A Three-Tier Rolling Cart
This is your mobile command center for pump parts, baby items, and personal essentials. Especially during those first few weeks, I would frequently get completely settled and trapped under a sleeping baby, only to realize I forgot my water bottle, my phone charger, or my snacks. Having a rolling cart right next to you keeps everything within arm's reach.
3. Dedicated Chargers
Buy an extra phone charger and a dedicated charger for your pump to leave permanently at your station. You do not want to be hunting for cords down between the cushions in the middle of the night.
4. The Ultimate Sanctuary Splurge: A Robot Vacuum
While this isn't a strict necessity, it was my ultimate self-care splurge. I got a robot vacuum, and oh boy, I didn't realize how much I actually needed it! While it doesn't completely replace a deep human cleaning, it keeps the daily floors in great shape, which made my mental health skyrocket. We have pets, along with a mix of carpet, wood, and linoleum floors. I just cleaned the vacuum's filter yesterday for the first time in over six months, and it’s still going strong. The technology is advanced now—let’s take advantage of the benefits!
5. Ambient Lighting & Nightlights
I love using a dim nightlight, sometimes draped safely with a swaddle blanket to create an extra-dark, soothing glow. Keeping the room dim makes it so much easier to drift back to sleep after a late-night pumping session.
6. Low-Stimulation Entertainment
Watching calm movies, slow videos, or listening to gentle music during the night can help you stay awake without keeping your brain wired. Look for comfort series that don't require heavy focus and have a minimal, quiet soundtrack.
Pregnancy Prep Tip: This is a wonderful activity to do before your delivery while you are still pregnant! Spend some time building a soothing playlist and a low-stress streaming library for the postpartum period. You will use this constantly, especially during the first five months, and you won't want to stress over finding something to watch at 3:00 AM.
7. A Soothing Subdued Scent
I really love using a little bit of Vicks BabyRub at my station. It provides a comforting, nostalgic aroma that clears the senses without being overpowering or unsafe for the baby.
Maximizing Milk Production
Being relaxed is the absolute secret to a healthy milk supply. Here are a few physical tools that changed the game for me:
Breast Massagers: Using a gentle massage gun or a small, specialized warming breast massager helps immensely and takes very little time. Reserving just five minutes to massage before you pump can yield amazing results. I add to the list a massage gun, during pump section I also massage my neck and back.
Targeted Supplements: While there are many options out there, I chose to stick with just one high-quality supplement: sunflower lecithin pills. They are incredible for maintaining smooth milk flow and preventing or treating painful clogged ducts.
Hydration Cocktails: Hydration drives milk production. Coconut water is fantastic for this—I love mixing coconut water with fresh lemonade for a refreshing, milk-boosting treat.
The Postpartum Essentials Checklist
Keep your rolling cart or side table stocked with these quick items so you never have to scramble:
Comfort & Care
Nipple butter or cream
Hydrating hand cream and lip balm
Scrunchies or hair ties
A comfortable robe (or a cozy blanket and slippers if you live in a colder climate or are delivering in the winter)
A portable fan (a lifesaver if you live in a hot climate or are recovering during the summer)
A small cosmetic bag stocked with allergy medicine, Tylenol, and Tums
Sheet face masks: Every now and then, it’s nice to pop a hydrating sheet mask on during a pump session to get a little skincare in while you are trapped in the chair!
Fuel & Tech
A water bottle
Juice or electrolyte drinks
Quick, one-handed snacks
Tissues and sanitizing wipes
Wireless earphones, or earbuds
iPad, laptop, or phone (If you use your phone for entertainment, buy a sturdy phone stand or base so you can look at it hands-free!)
Lunch bag to keep everything cool in your station
Pumping & Nursing Prep
Clean pump parts (and specialized pump-cleaning wipes for quick transitions)
A nail file set (to keep your nails smooth so you don't accidentally scratch yourself or the baby)
Extra swaddles
Silicone milk collectors: Even if you are strictly pumping or nursing, these are great to catch leaks on the opposite side.
A highly comfortable nursing bra that is soft enough to sleep in.
A Quick Lesson on Pump Settings: If you are an expecting mom and aren’t sure how pumps work yet, don't worry! All modern breast pumps feature a Stimulation Mode (a fast, light vibration that mimics a baby's initial latches to signal your breasts to release milk) and an Expression Mode (a slower, deeper suction designed to draw the milk out efficiently). You can use the stimulation setting on a pump to get your second nipple ready and responsive while nursing.
Simplifying the Wardrobe & Scheduling Routine
Don't forget to invest in a few high-quality, ultra-comfy postpartum loungewear sets. The other day, I saw a brilliant tip from a mom who bought one perfect, high-end lounge set, threw it in the washing machine every single night, and wore it clean again every morning.
If I could go back in time, I would buy two or three identical, comfortable sets and do exactly that. Removing the mental load of deciding what to wear when you are exhausted is a beautiful gift to yourself.
Finding Balance While Pumping
My biggest postpartum regret was definitely the chair situation—please don't skimp on your seating comfort! You need to be as rested as possible to take care of your little one.
If you have to pump with your baby awake in the room, plan out safe, nearby spaces to place them. In the early months, I utilized a bassinet right next to my chair, moving later to a bouncer, and eventually a playpen.
For those solo moments, a wearable pump is incredibly helpful. Just note that unless you buy a specialized 360-degree wearable pump, you cannot bend over without spilling your liquid gold! If you need to constantly bend down to tend to a baby, make sure your pump model allows for that movement.
Ultimately, while you can pump on the move, your best milk output will always come from a calm, quiet environment where you are comfortably seated. Many modern brands advertise that you can pump while running errands or washing dishes, but the reality is you rarely get the best results that way. Treat your pumping time like an important appointment: be present, sit down, relax, and dedicate that specific time to yourself.
